CAREER IN PUBLIC SECTOR BANKS

Banks in India are not only strong but are also growing fast. According to studies, Banking sector is one of the fastest growing sectors in the country. This growth has brought many opportunities.


Indian Banking Scenario

Regulation of Banking system in India started with Banking Regulation Act, 1949. Banks in India used to be in private hands. In 1969, 14 big private banks were nationalised bringing them under the ownership of government. After 11 years, in 1980, six more banks were nationalised. Of these 20 banks, one New Bank of India got merged in Punjab National Bank. Now in all there are 27 public sector banks in the country consisting of 19 nationalised banks and 8 banks from State Bank group (State Bank of India and its associates).


Manpower requirements

Public sector banks in India employ more than 8 lakh people at present. Of these a large number of people will be retiring in next 5-6 years. To fill this gap and to take up the growing business the Banks are on a recruiting spree as can be seen in media and from vacancy announcements. Only this year about 80,000 vacancies have been created in public sector banks due to retirements, resignations and expansion of business.


Clerical Positions

A clerk is mostly a front staff in a bank. Depending on the requirement clerks are placed at different counters of the banks e.g. savings, deposit, current deposit, term deposit, retail loans, cash credit, agricultural loans, credit cards, government business, cash receipt or payment etc. Maximum customer interface in banks occurs at these counters managed by clerical staff.


Career Prospects

Public sector banks are few organisations which offer promotion from one cadre to another. Thus those who join as clerks may be promoted as officers, as per banks norms. For bright candidates, in some banks, this promotion from a clerk to officer is possible in a period as short as one year.


Recruitments in Officers cadre

Vacancies in officer's cadre in public sector banks are filled from within the organization after promotion of clerks and also by direct recruitment. To meet the shortage of manpower in officer's cadre, nowadays the public sector banks are required to recruit large number of officers. Most of the vacancies for which recruitments are made are in Junior Management Graduate Scale I, which is the entry level position for joining a public sector bank as an officer. This entry level position is known as that of probationary officer or management trainee. Bank probationary officers can come from any discipline or field of study, although there is a misconception that only people from commerce or finance background are eligible. A finance or commerce background may help the candidate adjust to the banking environments faster than others but banks recruit talents from diverse backgrounds of science, literature etc. The minimum age to apply for entry level officer's position is 21 years. As regards qualification, the candidate should at least be a graduate from a UGC recognized university. What is IBPS?

IBPS stands for Institute of Banking Personal Selection.
It is an examining body that organises a written examination for selection of eligible candidates in the Nationalised banks in India for the post of Clerks/Probationary Officers/Specialist Officers.
There are 20 Nationalised Banks in India and further State bank of India has other branches too.
For the required man-power in the banks, each bank used to have its own selection procedure including Written Test followed by Interview and then Final selection based on the candidates’ performance.
Those who aspired to join any of the banks had to appear for all the exams as conducted by different banks. Every time the candidate had to fill up the form and pay the required fees for the test, which was a cumbersome process.
Introduction of one exam for 19 Nationalised Banks has brought a relief for the aspirants. IBPS conducts the written examination for the selection of the required man-power and helps the candidates to save their precious time and money that they used to spend for a career in Banking Sector.

General Awareness

This section generally checks how updated the student is at the time of the examination about the happenings world-wide. The questions test the General Knowledge and the Current Affairs knowledge of the student. Apart from these two, student may be asked on subjects like Economy and Banking questions also frequent in this section of the bank examination. Questions worth forty marks are asked in the examination from this segment. Quantitative Aptitude:

This section tests the Quantitative Skills of the student. This is a numerical segment and tests the mathematical prowess of a student. Subjects such as percentage, HCF and LMF of numbers, ratio and proportion, time distance and speed, linear equations, Volume and Surface area, Geometry, Data interpretation etc are asked in this segment. Reasoning:

This section tests the Reasoning Abilities and mental aptitude of the student. This section is thoroughly divided into verbal and non-verbal reasoning. In verbal reasoning, questions on topics such as Forcefulness of Argument, Courses of Action, Input-Output, Analogy, Assertion and Reason, Clock are asked. In the non verbal reasoning, questions on topics such as Classification, Incomplete Patterns, Grouping, Cubes and Dices are asked. Questions worth forty marks are asked in the examination from this segment.



Computer Aptitude/ Marketing Aptitude:

Computer Knowledge section engulfs questions on the basic operating system, questions on the Microsoft word package - Microsoft word, excel, power points and internet. Marketing Aptitude asks the basic questions on the marketing model. Questions worth forty marks are asked in the examination from this segment.



English Comprehension:

This section tests the language abilities and understanding of English grammar of the student. This section consists of questions on Passage Comprehension, Synonyms, Error Detection, Idioms & Phrases, Spellings Test, Cloze Passages, Active/Passive Voice, Para-Jumbled, Words Usage ETC. Questions worth forty marks are asked in the examination from this segment


The above tests except the Test of English Language and Descriptive Paper on English Composition are printed bilingually, that is, English and Hindi.
The examination also thrives on negative marking meaning with ever wrong answer, 0.25 marks are deducted.
