Introduction: Corals are calcareous marine invertebrates. Each coral is called a polyp and thousands of such polyps live together to form a colony, which grows when polyps multiply to make copies of themselves. They live in symbiotic relationship with the Zooxanthellae algae, which provides the coral with food and nutrients, which they make through photosynthesis, using the sun’s light. In turn, the corals give the algae a home and key nutrients. The zooxanthellae also give corals their bright colour.

Bleaching happens when corals experience stress in their environment due to changes in Temperature (Global warming /El-Nino events), pollution or  high levels of ocean acidity. They lose their symbiotic relationship and eventually their brilliant colours.

Mechanism of Coral Bleaching

    1. Increased toxicity under stressed conditions: the zooxanthellae living inside coral polyps start producing reactive oxygen species, which are not beneficial to the corals.
    2. Corals expel the colour-giving zooxanthellae from their polyps, which exposes their pale white exoskeleton, giving the corals a bleached appearance. This also ends the symbiotic relationship that helps the corals to survive and grow.
    3. Tolerance level: Bleached corals can survive depending on the levels of bleaching and the recovery of sea temperatures to normal levels. If heat-pollutions subside in time, over a few weeks, the zooxanthellae can come back to the corals and restart the partnership but severe bleaching and prolonged stress in the external environment can lead to coral death.
    4. Mass bleaching can turn a coral dominated reef to an algae dominated reef in the space of a few months — a process that can take decades or longer to reverse.
    5. Dead Corals: Without enough plant cells to provide the coral with food, it soon starves or becomes diseased. With time, the tissue of the coral disappears altogether, and the exposed skeleton is covered with algae.

Factors that are harmful for Corals:

Natural Factors:

      • Warmer water: If the temperature of the ocean is just 1oC higher than the average summer maximum for 4 weeks, bleaching can start.
      • Strong sunshine: Excessive sunlight adds to the impact of rising ocean temperatures. It is made worse by calm seas and low tides.
      • El Nino: short-term temperatures increases that normally accompany El Niño events  can be deadly.
      • pH level - Ocean acidification damages the calcareous shells of the polyps.
      • Sediment deposition
      • Extremely Lower  or higher levels of Salinity which may not be suitable for the polyps
    • Anthropogenic Factors:
      • Pollution: Toxins, sewage runoff and oilspills are most harming of factors.  For example many Sun Creams contains  oxybenzone which is harmful to corals.
      • Climate Change: It leads to rise in temperature and acidification. However, this can also open up of temperate waters for coral growth.
      • Mining: Such as sand mining sea-floor dredging etc.
      • Intensive Fishing: Destructive Fishing Methods such as Fishing with dynamite, cyanide, bottom trawling and Muro Ami (banging on the reef with sticks) can damage entire reefs and is unsustainable. Overfishing of herbivorous fish can lead to high levels of algal growth.
      • Recreational Activities:  Physical damage to the coral reefs can occur through contact from careless swimmers, divers, and poorly placed boat anchors.
      • Coastal Development: Due to dredging and land reclamation. Airports and buildings are often built on land reclaimed from the sea.

Impact of coral bleaching:

    • Loss of Habitat: Corals are home to over 1 million diverse aquatic species, including thousands of fish species. They are also called the “rainforests of the seas”.
    • Loss of shoreline: Coral reefs reduce shoreline erosion by absorbing energy from the waves. They can protect coastal housing, agricultural land, and beaches.
    • Loss of Marine ecosystem: Coral reef ecosystems are less than 1% of the ocean sea floor area but provide food and shelter to 25% of all marine species. Even giant clams and whales depend on the reefs to live.
    • Loss of Employment in coastal areas: an estimated 30 million small-scale fishermen and women whose livelihoods depend directly on the reefs’ survival. Coral reefs and related ecosystems have a global estimated value of ‘$2.7 trillion per year, or 2.2% of all global ecosystem service values’, this includes tourism and food.
    • Impact on Food Security: some 500 million people are dependent globally.
    • Tourism industry: For example, In Australia, the Barrier Reef, in pre-COVID times, generated $4.6 billion annually through tourism and employed over 60,000 people including divers and guides.

Conclusion: Since 1998, when first recorded mass bleaching event took place the frequency has increased. The longest and most damaging bleaching event - 2014 to 2017 started with reefs in Guam in the Western Pacific region affected the North, South-Pacific as well as the Indian Ocean.

A 2021 study by the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network (GCRMN), which is supported by the United Nations, showed that 14% of the world's coral on reefs had been lost between 2009 and 2018, with most of the loss attributed to coral bleaching, and  more than 30% of the world’s reefs can be lost well before we are in the second half of this century.

This requires a global conservation effort and scaling up of alliances such as Global Coral Reef Alliance (GCRA).
