Summary of India and Netherland Relations

India and the Netherlands have sustained their diplomatic relations in numerous fields. The main focus of this bilateral relation is Political dialogue, economic cooperation, sustainable development, climate change, and technology development. The relationship between these countries has been exceptional since 1947, and their relationship is based on strong economic and commercial connections built on shared democratic principles. Since 1980, the Netherlands has been a good economic partner of India. India became a good trade and investment partner of the Dutch after liberalization in India.

A forum known as Dutch Indo Water Alliance Leadership Initiative has been created to allow India and the Netherlands to collaborate on water-related problems. To implement water-related projects, the Netherlands is engaged with various states and municipalities in India, including the State of UP(Namami Ganga Programme), Tamil Nadu(water as leverage, water management, and conservation), and Kerala(Flood management).

In 2018, the 5th Joint Agriculture Working Group Meeting on Agriculture was held in New Delhi for the establishment of centers of excellence in horticulture, animal husbandry, dairy, fisheries, and food processing. An action plan was developed under the JWAG, and it is supplemented by skill enhancement and volume increase in the fields of cold chain and supply chain management.

Netherlands is a country in western Europe bordered by the North Sea, Belgium and Germany. In 1947, diplomatic relations were established with the Netherlands after India’s independence. They have strong political, economic and commercial relations. The multifaceted partnership between two countries is driven by the high level mutual exchange.

Institutional Mechanism

India and the Netherlands hold yearly meetings conducted by the Ministries of Foreign Affairs on both sides to address matters pertaining to their bilateral ties. The most recent Foreign Office Consultations took place in The Hague on November 10, 2021. The two sides have joint working groups (JWGs) at the functional level in the sectors of (i) science and technology, (ii) agriculture, (iii) healthcare, (iv) urban development, and (vi) counter-terrorism.
