West Bengal Public Service Commission (WBPSC) is a recruitment body for the vacancies in State Services in the state of West Bengal through the most prestigious exam of the state, the WBPSC examination. Stages of West Bengal Public Service Commission Examination

West Bengal Public Service Commission conducts the examination in three stages – Prelims, Mains, and Interview.

Preliminary Examination

  • In preliminary examination, there is only one paper, which comprises of 200 questions of General Studies questions and Mental Ability. It is important to remember that, Preliminary examination is qualifying in nature and marks of Preliminary examination will be counted in preparing merit list of Preliminary examination only and these marks will not be counted in final selection of candididate.Hence, only marks of mains examination and interview will be counted in preparing cutoff of West Bengal Public service Commission Examination.
  • Candidates should note that paper of prelims is of 2.5 hours and there will be negative marking (1/3rd) for wrong answers.
  • There are eight topics assigned by WWBPSC in which each topic carrying weightage of 25 marks.

Syllabus of Preliminary Examination:

General Science:

  • In general science, questions are generally asked from; Physics, Chemistry, Biology up to 10th standard.

Current Affairs of National/International importance:

  • Current Affairs is the biggest portion from which questions are asked. Preparation of WBPSC is dependent upon, how strong or weak your current portion is.
  • For current affairs candidates must prepare for at least 12 months, as in recent times old current affairs is also being emphasized by WBPSC Body.

History of India and West Bengal:

  • General understanding of the subject with the broad aspects of the history of West Bengal.
  • Although the basic understanding of every topic pertaining to History of India and West Bengal is required; But, most of topics should be read in current context.

Geography of India and West Bengal: General geography and geographical division of West Bengal and its major river systems:

  • Questions will relate to physical, social and economic geography of the country including the main features of Indian agricultural and natural resources.
  • Most of the questions will be asked related to particular industries and their location so, mapping work is very important to understand the basic requirement of Geography preparation.

Indian Polity

  • Questions will test your knowledge of the country’s political system, Panchayati Raj, community development, and planning in India and West Bengal, etc.

Indian National Movements and Contribution of West Bengal in it

  • Question will relate to the nature and character of the nineteenth century resurgence, growth of nationalism and attainment of Independence with special reference to West Bengal.
  • Culture of West Bengal and understanding the people of West Bengal and their contribution.

Mental Ability

  • Number series, Letter series, Odd man out, Coding-Decoding, Problems relating to Relations, Shapes and their sub sections.

English Composition

  • Synonyms and antonyms
  • Verbal verbs
  • Idioms and phrases

Mains Examination

In mains examination, you will have total of eight papers:

  • In mains examination of six compulsory papers, four are of multiple choice question types .This Includes:
    a. General Studies- I
    b. General Studies- II
    c. The Constitution of India and Indian Economy including role and functions of Reserve Bank of India.
    d. Arithmetic and Test of Reasoning.
  • • Candidates should note that optional paper is meant for those candidates only who are giving examination for group A and group B of WBPSC.

  • Each paper of mains will be of descriptive type and paper of general English and general Hindi will be up to the level of senior secondary level.
  • The number of candidates that will be admitted in mains examination will be 15 times of vacancies in category wise.

Interview Stage

WBPSC Mock Interview

  • The interview is of 200 marks. Basically, it is a viva type Q & A type series where questions pertaining to current affairs and educational background are being asked from candidates.
  • The Viva-voce will be to test the personality of the candidates. This test will be in matters of general interest and is intended to test the candidate’s alertness. For instance, Intelligence and general outlook will be tested. For WBPSC exam preparation, consideration will also be paid to the bearing and physique of the candidate. It will be conducted either in Hindi or in English depending upon the option selected by the candidate.

Eligibility Criteria – Important for WBPSC preparation

There are certain requirements to appear for the State Services Examination. We will lay down the important criteria required for appearing in the WBPSC exam.

Educational Qualification

  • In order to sit in the West Bengal Public Service Commission, candidates must have a degree from any recognized university equivalent to the degree of Bachelor of Science, Arts, Commerce, or of any technical subject.
  • Aspiring candidates in the last year of their graduation can also sit in this examination.

Age Limit

  • Minimum WBCS Age Limit for:
  • Group A and C – 21 years
  • Group B – 20 years (For West Bengal Police Service only)
  • Group D – 21 years
  • Maximum WBCS Age Limit for:
  • Group A and C – 36 years (As on January 1 of the year of the examination)
  • Group B – 36 years (As on January 1 of the year of the examination)
  • Group D – 39 years (As on January 1 of the year of the examination.
  • The lower age limit for the WWBPSC is 21 years and the upper age limit is 37 years of age for the general category of students. The SC, ST and OBC candidates can claim age relaxation of 5 years over and above the upper age limit.

WBPSC Post Special Condition
West Bengal Police Service (Group ‘B’ Service)
  • The minimum height requirement for male candidates – 1.65 meters
  • The minimum height requirement for female candidates – 1.50 metres
  • Height requirement is subject to relaxation in the case of candidates belonging to races such as:
    a. Gorkhas
    b. Garwalis
    c. Assamese Tribal’s etc.
  • Candidates intending to be considered for this Group must indicate their height in appropriate column of the application form
Assistant Canal Revenue Officer
  • Will have to work in remote areas and their jurisdiction will cover a large number of villages.
West Bengal Junior Social Welfare Service
  • In homes of blind/deaf/dumb- degree or Diploma or Certificate in the training of Blind and / or Deaf and Dumb shall be an essential qualification
  • Male candidates will be unsuitable for the posts meant for institutions for females, and female candidates will be unsuitable for the posts meant for institutions for males.
West Bengal Subordinate Land Revenue Service, Grade – I
  • Has good working knowledge of the Bengali Language, written and spoken
  • Candidates with Nepali as their mother tongue will need to pass a departmental examination in Bengali in two years
  • Shall be appointed provisionally and shall undergo a period of six months’ in-service training
  • The training includes subjects such as cadastral survey, preparation of records-of-rights, revenue laws, elementary instructions in all other laws relevant for the service
  • Candidates who fail to pass the end of Training Examination shall be liable to be discharged without notice

For Prelims

  • For prelims practicing and giving mock test is the key as this stage is for screening purpose of good student only. So, give mock test and prepare your mind accordingly to eliminate the wrong answer.

  1. History: Spectrum for Modern India and NCERT books for Ancient and Medieval India.
  2. Geography: NCERT books of class XI and XII along with the G.C Leong book. While studying Geography, you should always have Orient Blakswan Atlas to mark the place, mountains, and rivers on the Atlas.
  3. Indian Economy: Read Chahal Academy Economy booklet. Further, a large number of economy questions come from Current affairs also.
  4. General Science: NCERT books from 6th to 12th books, you can also read Tata McGraw Hill book.
