On 4th February, 1922, the angry residents of Chauri-Chaura village gathered in front of the police station to protest against the arrest of their leader, while campaigning against the sale of liquor. However, the police opened fire on the villagers, which angered them to such an extent that they set the police station on fire killing twenty-three policemen. Gandhi, worried about the increasing use of violence, immediately withdrew the Movement.
