Rajasthan Public Service Commission (RPSC) is a recruitment body for the vacancies in State Services in the state of Rajasthan through the most prestigious exam of the state, the RPSC examination. Stages of Rajasthan Public Service Commission Examination

Rajasthan Public Service Commission conducts the examination in three stages – Prelims, Mains, and Interview.

Preliminary Examination

  • In the preliminary examination, there is only one paper, which comprises of 150 questions of General Studies as well as questions of general science. It is important to remember that, Preliminary examination is qualifying in nature, and marks of Preliminary examination will be counted in preparing the merit list of Preliminary examination only and these marks will not be counted in the final selection of candidates. Hence, only marks of mains examination and interview will be counted in preparing the cutoff of the Rajasthan Public service Commission Examination.
  • Candidates should note that the paper of prelims is of two hours and there will be negative marking for wrong answers (1/3rd will be deducted for every wrong answer).

Syllabus of preliminary examination

  • General Science :
    In general science basically questions are asked from; Physics, Chemistry, Biology up to 10th standard level.
  • Current Affairs of National/International importance :
    Current Affairs is the biggest portion from which questions are asked. Preparation of RPSC is dependent upon, how strong or weak your current portion is.For current affairs, candidates must prepare for at least 12 months, as in recent times old current affairs is also being emphasized by the RPSC Body.
  • History of India and Rajasthan :
    General understanding of the subject with the broad aspects of the history of Rajasthan. Although a basic understanding of every topic pertaining to History of India and Rajasthan is required, most of the topics should be read in current context.
  • Geography of India and Rajasthan; General geography and geographical division of Rajasthan and its major river systems :
    Questions will relate to physical, social and economic geography of the country including the main features of Indian agricultural and natural resources. Most of the questions will be asked related to particular industries and their location so, mapping work is very important to understand the basic requirement of Geography preparation.
  • Indian Polity :
    Questions will test knowledge on the country’s political system, Panchayati Raj, community development and planning in India and Rajasthan.
  • Indian Movements and Contribution of Rajasthan in it :
    Question will relate to the nature and character of the nineteenth century resurgence, growth of nationalism and attainment of Independence with special reference to Rajasthan.
  • Questions based on General Mental Ability


Logical Reasoning (Deductive, Inductive, Adductive) :

  • Statement and Assumptions, Statement and Argument, Statements and Conclusion, Courses of Action.
  • Analytical Reasoning.
  • Mental Ability : Number series, Letter series, Odd man out, Coding-Decoding, Problems relating to Relations, Shapes and their sub sections.
  • Basic Numeracy : Elementary knowledge of Mathematical and Statistical Analysis.
  • Number System, Order of Magnitude, Ratio and Proportion, Percentage, Simple and Compound Interest, Data Analysis (Tables, Bar diagram, Line graph, Pie-chart).

Mains Examination

In the mains examination, you will have total of four papers:
  1. General Hindi and General English (200 marks, 3 hours)
  2. Paper I: General studies paper (200 marks, 3 hours)
  3. Paper II: General studies paper (200 marks, 3 hours)
  4. Paper III: General studies paper (200 marks, 3 hours)

Total Marks of Mains Examination 800 marks.
  • Each paper of mains will be of descriptive type and paper of general English and general Hindi will be up to the level of senior secondary level.
  • The number of candidates that will be admitted in mains examination will be 15 times the vacancies in category wise.

Interview Stage

RPSC Mock Interview

  • The interview is of 100 marks. Basically, it is a viva type Q & A type series where questions pertaining to current affairs and educational background are being asked from candidates.
  • The Viva-voce will be to test the personality of the candidates. This test will be in matters of general interest and is intended to test the candidate’s alertness. For instance, Intelligence and general outlook will be tested. For RPSC exam preparation, consideration will also be paid to the bearing and physique of the candidate. It will be conducted either in Hindi or in English depending upon the option selected by the candidate.

Eligibility Criteria – Important for RPSC preparation

There are certain requirements to appear for the State Services Examination. We will lay down the important criteria required for appearing in the RPSC exam.

Educational Qualification

  • In order to sit in the Rajasthan Public Service Commission, candidates must have a degree from any recognized university equivalent to the degree of Bachelor of Science, Arts, Commerce, or of any technical subject.
  • Aspiring candidates in the last year of their graduation can also sit in this examination.

Age Limits

  • The candidate should not be less than 21 years and not more than 40 years before the examination.
  • The lower age limit for the RPSC is 21 years and the upper age limit is 40 years of age for the general category of students. The SC, ST and OBC candidates can claim age relaxation of 5 years over and above the upper age limit.

Cut-Off Marks

Examination of 2017 of Rajasthan Public Service commission, which was conducted in march 2019:
  • The cutoff of prelims in general category for unreserved category was 78.54.
  • For women (General) cutoff was 68.04.

How to Prepare for Rajasthan Public Service commission

For Prelims

  • You have to focus on the basics for the RPSC Prelims. So, read the syllabus thoroughly. Then, go through the Previous Year Question papers and understand what the exam demands. The syllabus and Questions papers will help you to decide what to study and what to omit.
  • Newspaper - Read the newspaper daily. Follow what the Centre, as well as the state, is doing for the people. You also have to pay attention to facts and famous personalities from Rajasthan.
  • NCERTs - These are government authorized books and form the basis of your exam preparation. you have to read these books properly to understand advanced level books. If you have read these books before, a speed reading will also do. Do not skip these under any circumstances
  • Read fewer books - Prepare a proper booklist for your preparation. do not read every book that is available for a particular subject. Pick the best ones and revise those books again and again. Although you can supplement those reading. Follow the principle of Read minimum and Revise Maximum!
  • Notes - Keep your notes very short and precise. As you finish one chapter or topic, prepare notes. It will take you a long way till the final day of your exams.
  • Revision is the key - The inevitable step is revision. Revise as much as you can. And practice answer writing from the first day itself. You will be way ahead in the competition.
  • Mock tests - Appear for multiple mock tests to polish your knowledge. Regular mock tests will train your brain to get prepared for the final day. The Prelims stage is the first most important stage because it will help you move into the Mains stage. So, keep practicing by appearing for mock tests. Further, mock tests will train your brain to acquire the technique of answering by elimination method as well.

For Mains

  • Newspaper - Again, read the newspaper daily. Read about government policies, and also international affairs. You have to pay attention to facts about your state as well.
  • NCERTs - Read these books to form a strong background of the subjects.
  • Government Websites - Supplement your studies with material from government websites like Policy Research Studies, Yojana , UPSC , etc. The material on these websites is 100% correct.
  • Keep your shorter booklist - Prepare a proper booklist for your preparation. do not read every book that is available for a particular subject. Pick the best ones and revise those books again and again. Although you can supplement those reading. Follow the principle of Read minimum and Revise Maximum!
  • Notes - Prepare comprehensive notes. It means that you must prepare Prelims and Mains notes together. This will help you to prepare for both the stages from an early stage.
  • Mock tests - Practice lots of answer writing. You will be able to develop speed and answer writing skills.

For Interview

  • For personality test/interview, you have to sit for mock interviews. Booklist for RPSC preparation

  1. History: Spectrum for Modern India and NCERT books for Ancient and Medieval India.
  2. Geography: NCERT books of class XI and XII along with the G.C Leong book. While studying Geography, you should always have Orient Blakswan Atlas to mark the place, mountains, and rivers on the Atlas.
  3. Indian Economy: Read Chahal Academy Economy booklet. Further, a large number of economy questions come from Current affairs also.
  4. General Science: NCERT books from 6th to 12th books, you can also read Tata McGraw Hill book.
  5. Environment: Chahal Academy Environment booklet or IGNOU material is more than enough.
  6. Polity: Go for M. Laxmikant. There is no substitute for this book.
  7. Rajasthan Special: You can pick any book for Rajasthan special preparation book. For example, Upkar publication book for Rajasthan special, yearbook of PD, Ghatna Chakra yearly compilation for state special.
