Air Defence Systems
Indian Ballistic Missile Defence Programme
India’s BMD system is a two-tiered defense system that can intercept any incoming missile launched up to 5,000 kilometers away.
Its development started in 1999, following the Kargil
conflict.
Prithvi Air Defence (PAD) is designed for high-altitude interception (exo-atmospheric).
• Advanced Air Defence (AAD) is an endo-atmospheric interception system designed for low altitude interceptions.
Project Kusha
• Is ambitious and indigenous defence project of the DRDO to develop the long range anti-ballistic missile defence system by 2029. It consists multiple types of interceptor missile named M1, M2 and M3 with the range of 150 km, 250 km and 350 km respectively.
Mission Sudarshan Chakra
• Indigenous integrated air and missile defence system to be deployed by 2035. It will provide the full security from enemy’s air projectile like missile, aircrafts and drones.
• It is the integration of the following systems:
• QRSAM (Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missiles)
• VSHORADS (Very Short-Range Air Defence System)
• DEW (Directed Energy Weapon)
• AAD (Advanced Air Defence)
• PAD (Prithvi Air Defence)
