AKBAR’S REIGN (1556-1605)
Early Years and Regency of Bairam Khan
At the age of 13, Akbar ascended to the Mughal throne following his father Humayun’s death in 1556. His initial years were under the regency of Bairam Khan, a loyal confidant of Humayun. Under Bairam Khan’s guidance, the
Mughal Empire expanded significantly, particularly with the victory in the Second Battle of Panipat against Hemu and the Afghan forces in 1556.
Military Exploits and Conquests
Akbar’s reign was characterized by an array of military campaigns and conquests:
• Territorial Expansion: The Mughal Empire expanded substantially, stretching from Kabul to Jaunpur, encompassing key territories like Gwalior and Ajmer.
• Conquests: Notable conquests included Malwa in 1562, the Gondwana region in 1564 after a fierce battle with Rani Durgavati, and Gujarat in 1573. The defeat of Rana Pratap Singh of Mewar in the Battle of Haldighati in 1576 solidified Mughal suzerainty over many Rajput rulers.
Further Conquests: Akbar annexed Bihar and Bengal in 1576, and later occupied the Khandesh region in 1591. Chand Bibi’s defence of Ahmednagar against Mughal forces demonstrated regional resistance.
• Two of Akbar's major contributions were the consolidation of the northwest and the establishment of a strategic frontier for the empire. His conquest of Sindh in 1590 also paved the way for trade along the Indus River, benefiting Punjab.
Rajput Policy and Alliances
Akbar adopted a conciliatory approach towards the Rajput rulers, forging alliances through matrimonial ties and political engagements:
• Marriages: His matrimonial alliance with Rajput princesses, including the daughter of Raja Bharamal of Amer, initiated a significant shift in the Mughal-Rajput relations.
• Administration: Many Rajput generals rose to prominence within the Mughal administration. Raja Bhagawan Das and Raja Man Singh were appointed to senior positions, symbolizing the assimilation of Rajputs into the Mughal governance
