The period also saw the rise of urbanization, faster transportation and communication, and the development of democratic systems, along with laws that emphasized equality and fairness.
Meaning and Birth of Renaissance
The term “Renaissance,” meaning “rebirth,” refers to a period of great cultural renewal that began in Italy in the 14th century. During this time, Italy was made up of various small city-states, many of which were built on the foundations of ancient Roman ruins. The geographical location of these cities made them thriving hubs for trade and intellectual exchange.
Merchants from all over the world brought not just wealth, but fresh ideas that spurred new ways of thinking. With a new political and social structure in place, there was greater political freedom, creating an environment conducive to academic, artistic, and cultural growth. As a result, people had more time to devote to study and creative endeavours.
