The Dominance of the Congress System
The Congress Party’s dominant role in India’s early political landscape led many to refer to the initial years of the republic as the “Congress System”. This dominance was attributed not only to Congress’s electoral success but also to the weakness of the opposition during this period.
In the three general elections following independence, Congress consistently secured overwhelming majorities. Despite not always winning a majority of the total votes, it claimed a disproportionate share of seats. In 1952, for instance, Congress garnered 45% of the vote but took 74% of the seats. In the subsequent elections of 1957 and 1962, it secured 371 and 361 seats respectively out of 494, maintaining a presence in state governments nationwide, except for Kerala in 1957
