The Emergence of Electoral Politics
One of the most important achievements of India in the years since independence is the adoption of democratic polity and adhering to it despite the odds. As political scientist Samuel Huntington observed India in this context “is a dramatic exception”.
India defied many predictions and social-scientific generalizations when, in the face of all odds, it affirmed its faith in opting for democracy at the inception of independence. The provision of a universal adult franchise at the very outset was all the more remarkable given the prevailing challenges. These challenges, as observed by many, were:
• Largely poor and illiterate population
• Immense geographic, social and economic diversity
Never in history was such an experiment undertaken. The success of India in this context over the years has become an example to be emulated by other countries across the globe.
