The Gangetic Plain
The Indo-Gangetic Plain, characterized by its dense population and extensive drainage by Himalayan rivers, is highly susceptible to both floods and droughts. Approximately 75% of the total annual rainfall occurs within the short monsoon period between June and September.
The major river systems originating from the Himalayas carry vast amounts of sediment, leading to river channel siltation. This phenomenon significantly contributes to frequent flooding, particularly in the plains of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
