A government initiative called Agnipath Defence Policy Reform was started with the goal of enlisting young people in the Indian military. On June 14, 2022, Rajnath Singh, the defence minister, unveiled the Agnipath scheme. The Cabinet Committee on Security has approved the new defence recruitment reform, which will take effect right away. The soldiers enlisted through this plan will be referred to as Agniveers. It is being said that there has been a radical change in the way non-officer personnel are recruited into the armed forces. It is anticipated that the plan will lower the defence budget and make the force leaner.
The minimum age requirement to become an Agniveer in the IAF is 17 ½ years old, and the maximum age requirement is 21 years old on the enrollment date.

A new defence recruitment model called Agnipath would let "patriotic and motivated" young people enlist in the military for a four-year term. The idea is to use a biannual exercise spaced six months apart to recruit between 45,000 and 50,000 personnel below officer rank in each of the three services (Army, Navy & Airforce). The soldiers hired under the Agnipath programme will be referred to as "Agniveers." This will prepare the young of the country and bolster national security.
From now on, this programme will be the only way to recruit soldiers for the Indian Navy, Air Force, and Armed Forces, the three defence services. Agniveers will be enrolled in all three services via a centralised online system, in addition to campus interviews and special rallies at accredited technical institutions like the National Skills Qualifications Framework and the Industrial Training Institutes. The Model is predicated on an all-Indian selection procedure that is merit-based.Only 25% of the batch, though, will be rehired into their respective services after four years, for a total of fifteen years.
The Agnipath scheme allows the youth of this country, both boys and girls in the age bracket 17-20 to transform their lives by joining the Indian Armed Forces (Army, Navy, Air Force). They will be in service for 4 years and then receive lumpsum entitlement at time of termination and support to skill and find another job. 1/4th of them will also be absorbed in the Army itself for 15 years of service. This programme undoubtedly represents a significant transformation in India's defense recruitment landscape. While proponents highlight its potential to create a younger, fitter, and more cost-effective military, concerns regarding the future prospects and social integration of ex-Agniveers remain unaddressed.
