The Meghalaya Public Service Commission conducts Meghalaya Civil Services Examination for recruitment to various administrative positions in Meghalaya.
The recruitment process includes 3 stages -

  1. Preliminary examination
  2. Mains examination
  3. Interview/ Personality test

Stage I: Preliminary examination

Meghalaya PSC Civil Services Prelims Exam Pattern

The MPSC Civil Services Prelims is a screening test used to shortlist candidates for the Mains. It includes two objective-type papers.

Negative marking ⅓ marks deducted out of the total marks assigned for that question for every wrong answer ⅓ marks deducted out of the total marks assigned for that question for every wrong answer

Note I: Paper –II of the Civil Services (Preliminary) Examinations will be a qualifying with minimum qualifying marks.
Note II: The questions will be of multiple choice objective type.
Note III: It is mandatory for the candidate to appear in both the papers of Civil Services (Prelim) examination for the purpose of evaluation. Therefore a candidate will be disqualified in case he/ she does not appear in both the papers of the Preliminary Examination.

Meghalaya Civil Services Mains Exam Pattern

The 2nd Stage that is the Mains Exam of MCS includes 1 Qualifying Paper and 7 merit papers of descriptive nature.

MCS Mains Exam Syllabus
Qualifying Paper: English
The aim of the paper is to test the candidates’ ability to read and understand serious discursive prose, and to express his ideas clearly and correctly in English. The pattern of questions would be broadly as follows

Note: The paper on English will be of Matriculation or equivalent standard and will be of qualifying nature only. The marks obtained in this paper will not be counted for ranking.

Merit Papers
Paper I – Essay – 250 Marks
Candidates may be required to write essays on multiple topics. They will be expected to keep closely to the subject of the essay to arrange their ideas in orderly fashion, and to write concisely. Credit will be given for effective and exact expression.

Paper II – General Studies – I (Indian Heritage and Culture, History and Geography of the World and Society ) – 250 Marks Paper III – General Studies – II (Governance, Constitution. Polity, Social Justice and International Relations) – 250 Marks Paper IV – General Studies – III (Technology, Economic Development, Bio – Diversity, Environment, Security and Disaster Management) – 250 Marks

Paper V – General Studies – IV (Ethics, Integrity and Aptitude ) – 250 Marks
This paper will include questions to test the candidates attitude and approach to issues relating to integrity, probity in public life and his problem solving approach to various issues and conflicts faced by him in dealing with society Questions may utilise the case study approach to determine these aspects. The following broad areas will be covered:-

Paper VI and VII: Optional Subject Papers
Total number of questions in the question papers of optional subjects will be eight. All questions will carry equal marks. Each paper will be divided into two parts, viz. Part A and Part B, each part containing four questions. Out of eight questions candidates are required to answer any five questions taking at least two questions each from Part A and Part B.
Any one Optional subject is to be chosen from the following subjects -
Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science, Anthropology, Botany, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Commerce & Accountancy, Economics, Electrical Engineering, English, Garo, Geography, Geology, Hindi, History, Khasi, Law, Management, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Medical Science, Philosophy, Physics, Political Science and International Affairs, Psychology, Public Administration, Sociology, Statistics, and Zoology.
